Whatever you might think of Jamie Cullum, his new track ‘Love for Sale’ is a bold step. Much maligned for representing the accessible (or middle of the road) side of jazz, Cullum seemed not to live up to the cool his earlier career promised. Collabs with the Neptunes seemed to make him destined to become Shenfield’s finer answer to Trousersnake. As in keeping with the commonly fickle US Hip-Pop industry, it was not to be. But now the model marrying piano midget is back with a authentic sounding dub piece, apparently sampling Roots Manuva’s iconic ‘Witness the Fitness’. The word on the street is in fact the ‘sample’ was recorded live with old, crusty, sinsemilla infused space echo units. All devised by Cullum and long term collaborator Dan the Automator. The result is his maturing gritty soul vocals perfectly blending with a dubbier (if that was even possible) version of Witness. The track is real. And the track is free. For this reason, FREATS thinks it is cool and it’s out now on Island Records.
